How to create this

Any one know how you would go about creating this particle effect at 4:20 http://vimeo.com/55276524 in this video, looks awesome just not sure how to get those particles jumping around to form a specific thing

The general approach would be to have a few main particles moving to targets (but you could drive them any way you like, even with gravity and collisions so they just jump around) and spawning a trail of particles behind each one of these main particles. Spawning by distance is probably best. The spawned particles would have zero velocity at birth so they stay where they are left. You also have to send them out to a new event so they don't mix with the main particles. Add a Delete > By Age operator in that new event to kill the trail after a while.

Then you mesh the whole PFlow with Frost.

To leave material at the target points, you could spawn more particles on Collision and send them to another event. Don't let them die like the trails to build the actual shape you are trying to recreate (e.g. a text or something like that).

Obviously I did not work on this project so I don't know the exact details, but that's how I would approach it if I had to create something like this. You might want to read our interview with Danny Robashkin who did work on this video if you haven't yet:

not sure why the trail stops being born part way through

What is the particle count you are producing? It is possible that you are running out of particles (spawning can produce a lot of particles), and the default limit of PFlow is 100K particles at once. See if increasing it changes anything...

There is another limit related to the number of unique IDs that can be generated, but that usually comes into play after many millions unique particles (e.g. in Krakatoa), so I doubt it is that...

yup that did it

having an issue where the particles that leap up then go off to a different point on the model eventually die off some how and dont end up filling in the area they need to.
If i spawn too many of them then it just becomes an exponential mess, too little and they die off from something
