Feedback: Explorer Concept Art

Hi everyone,

I wanted to post some progress here on an concept art class I'm taking on

It was practice to try and emulate how Charlie Bowater work to create concepts.
I'm still working on it during my spare time, but I wanted to get more feedback so fire away! I've currently narrowed down to my favorite 3 designs and have one in mind that I'd like to focus on. It's just a matter of putting some more time in to make some variations and nail it.

Here are the stages I went though to get where I am right now. My theme was 'Explorer'.

The general proportions are a bit off. The Indiana Jones looking guy's lower legs are too long, and his hands are too big. The mountain climber guy's hands are also huge--as big as his head. The desert guy's lets seems a bit short (unless you want to depict a short person).

Are you using proper references (as in, shooting your own photo references)? You should do that, since your current anatomy/figure understanding is strong enough to work completely out of your head.

I agree with you about the proportions. I had reference for the final 3 characters I was narrowing down my idea to but only the center character has an exact photo of his pose. It's of a mountain climber so his suit is very large and that is what make his hands, limbs large and his head tiny because of his boots and gloves. He does still seem tall though so I would compare it to the the reference, but I was actually going to move forward with the 'Indy' explorer over the other two concepts.

I have a few references for her too (based on a certain person), but not a full body reference pose like you've suggested. The fact that you didn't notice it was a woman shows my silhouette is still not good enough either.

While I haven't touched this project in a month I have been working on my understanding of the human figure in shapes in daily sketch sessions to help with my animation and I've been personally pleased with . I'll take a couple of photos in in that general pose for reference and mix up what what the upper body is doing. I'd like to make as many as 5 or so variants of this standing pose because I like it, and I think I can make it a much stronger this time. It may take me a few steps back but this drawing needs a better foundation.
