Sheet metal deformer effect - any suggestions?

Has anyone got any techniques for simulating a damaging sheet metal effect within a dynamics environment?. I have tinkered with soft body dynamics but have yet to find a way of realistically deforming 'metal' when it impacted. Basically I am looking for the 'metal' to permanently bend/crease/deform upon a hard enough impact.

Something between soft body and rigid body I suppose.

Any suggestions?

Wow, there's a myriad of ways to deform a sheet metal object.

What type of object do you have in mind and what is it being hit by ?
Just hitting the floor can be done using deformers ... and then
there's dynamics ... just too wide open at this point.

I like to stick to things I know like PLA, cage deformer, etc rather
than a collider deformer in v16+.

Lots of ways.

I'd give softbodies another try mate. Give particular attention to the Shape Conservation settings. I'd try using a lower resolution cage for sim and mesh deform a high resolution mesh with rivets/panels and details etc. Much faster. The tension tag might also allow for some wrinkles and shader damage effects?*

Kind of like this technique*GSG tutorial

Good luck.

...and how about animated textures in the displacement channel? Either via AfterEffects, or even Proximal (with the impacting, dynamic objects falling onto a surface to generate the black & white map)
