Question Regarding the Graphics Card Tech used in Maya

I have a 2010 Mac Pro which I intend to work on, and hopefully in OSX... So I am limited to a 680 or 7970 as options a k5000 being far out of my range and probably not worth it. I learned Lightwave 3D in college this year and am hoping to try to teach myself Maya over the summer.

My question basically is regarding which technology is leveraged by Maya OpenCL or CUDA, since GeForce does CUDA but is horrible at OpenCL and ATI obviously doesnt have CUDA but trounces the GeForce cards in OpenCL.

I have scene some videos where dynamics and such calculations were done through graphics cards so I was wondering what the best choice would be for me. I currently have a 1GB ATI 5870 HD in my Mac Pro

Thanks in Advance. I know I am probably bringing up something that has been discussed before but from searching I wasnt sure of the answer, and would like to be confident in it before spending around $500

Thanks!

Specifically wondering about Viewport, Viewport 2.0 and Dynamics

I would recommend the 680. You're right that the K5000 isn't worth it and I have the 7950, which is a bit of a letdown to be honest. It doesn't fare much better than the 5870 in OS X and I let AMD know about it. They need to get their Mac drivers closer to Nvidia's which are performing better in the current lineup. There are some gaming and compute benchmarks here:

unfortunately they don't test apps like Maya and I don't have a 680 to test but I'm pretty sure you'd see the same performance there.

So the large gulf between the 2 in terms of OpenCL Performance wouldnt be an issue?

Is anything in dynamics Maya does OpenCL based or is it CUDA based?

7970 vs k5000

7970 vs 680

7970 seems to kill the Nvidia cards in CL Benchmark, which is why I was thinking if Maya has something OpenCL Accelerated the 7970 is the way to go.

Thanks again for the help!

sorry, I forgot to mention that Maya currently doesn't use OpenCL or CUDA for anything so you will not benefit from either of those card's compute capabilities.
