modeling ground cover..

Well..the image says it all...would love to have your ideas on how to model the leaves on the ground...
i tried texturing by mixing a lot of maps..but the depth is always missing..tried generating bump maps but no good results..particles are killing the proxies with multiscatter is what i'm working on right now...
would really appreciate some workarounds....
