Maya Vertexes problem.

Hello guys im new to the maya world i just bought some dvd's from digital tutor and im learning from them . But i have a problem it seems that the vertexes are working against me :P .
If i select a couple of vertexes it moves the entire object , but if i select another object it works perfect. I reseted the move tool , deleted by type history nothing. I created another scene and it works fine it's just in this scene is giving me bad things.

export the model as OBJ, delete it and re-import it. I think it may work.
