Forsaken Crest (Human face mask)

Hey everyone,

I've been modeling all the crests from Warcraft franchise, and now I'm working on the last one, the Icon of Torment or the Undead Crest; or the Forsaken Crest.. idk it has a lot of names

OK here's my ref:

And here's my model so far:

I exported it to ZBrush, refined it a bit and imported back to 3ds Max. I lost some roughness from the face but I got a cleaner surface.

This is the model after refinement in ZBrush:

I think the lips look better on the original model...

Anyways, it's now a bit hard for me to find out where the problems are and how I can get closer to my reference. I posted here so I can get some professional feedback

Thanks in advance!

I used 3ds Max's freeform paint tools and refined the original model with 3ds Max itself. The face after Zbrush was too soft imo... But still I'm not satisfied with it, specially the eyes.

Any c&c are welcome.

It looks like you have a good start there. I think the main issue is that the reference image you have appears to be rotated slightly to the side, so following that has distorted the proportions of the face. I think the mouth is too narrow, the eyes are set too far apart (and probably too high compared to the other features), and that the eyes are rotated too much. By that I mean that the outer corners are rotated too much compared to the inner. I did a rough liquify real quick with some changed proportions. Obviously not great but it gives an idea what I was referring to.

I got more progress on the model, actually it's completed now:

But you see the middle arrow is covering the eagle's eye, thus I can't keep it in shape. So I decided to cut the face as well.

Thanks to csalexan, I brought her eyes a bit closer to each other. Also her forehead wasn't so nice so I pushed it back a little and tweaked the topology there. Here's the face and its wireframe:

Also a close up from the eagle's head:

I'll appreciate any comments/critiques

Here's my reference again:

I cut both the face and the middle arrow:
(Images are a little bigger than what's shown here, just open them in a new tab for the full res)

How do you think it's turned out?

Are you planning to texture it? If not I think you should give the model more attention to capture the form closer to the reference. Because the mask has some curves which need to be defined stronger. Its more than a 'hard surface' mask rather than an organic face.

I can see that you tried to show those lines but I think you need to make them more hard edged.

Overall its always cool to make a warcraft project. Looks good!

Thank you Dermiroth, the final image I'm heading for is similar to this one:

I also thought I might need to make more stress on those edges, so I set up the scene for it and got a render out of it:

Probably making those edges a bit sharper makes it look better.

Feathers need a little work, but overall are there any more flaws I'm missing?

Just a quick doodle with Liquify.

IMHO, the main issue with this mask is it's flatness. As far as I can see, your mask matches pretty well with that concept in terms of frontal view. What you need to do is just modify some vertices in one single axis (that's what I did with liquify - modified it only in horizontal direction). Then you probably should define eyelids a bit better and it will look a lot prettier.

Thanks a bunch Tushkan, seems you're quite right. I had a reference shot, so I compared my mask with a real face:

Aside from the depth of the mask, eyes are also higher, but I won't change the eyes.

It's OK to leave the eyes where they are if you want to keep it with the concept art. Just make sure you work on the eyelids and brow's depth so they look more real.

Thanks a lot to all of you guys, you gave some great feedback, thought I'm gonna call it done here:

I didn't really change anything, just some lights. So I hope I wasn't rude or disrespectful to any of you, I'm just tired of working on this crest Px

Oh and btw, I checked battle.net and realized that the official crest is horizontally flipped from the one I uploaded here.
