Turn hand into spirit/smoke?

Hey all... I'm working on a project that needs a couple cgi elements, and I need to do it myself due to budgetary constraints

The first shot will be a sort of smoke/spirit hand that comes from the sky, grabs an object, then comes back down and reveals a new object in the "palm"...

What I'm thinking is to buy a cheap model of a hand from turbosquid.com and then somehow "smokify" it. Since I'm new to 3dsmax, any pointers and tips to guide me along the way? I'm happy to learn what I need to, but I'm not trying to become a proper 3d artist here, just to get the shots I need, so a sort of direct "to-do" list from your experience is much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
