need some lighting/rendering advice (maya)

Hey all,
I posted this in the maya section, but i thought it might get seen more here..
Im a realtive newbie to lighting/rendering. So I could do with a little advice on a project im working on.

I have a back plate that I need to put a cg element into
[IMG][/IMG]

the CG element will be on the right hand side of frame.
The room it self has no windows and was lit with over head spotlights which we blacked out over the girl. but the ones near the door provided a bit of fill light. and then used a fluorescent tube to light her from the behind/side.

I was hoping someone could give me soem advice on going about lighting and rendering this using mental ray. As im not even sure where to start :(

(im in maya)

Well I'd first start by sending that image into maya and drop it into my camera's image plane. Then I'll place a simple sphere to the right side and try to position my area light to get the high light positioned similar to the high light on the girls' hair. The high light together with the shadow on her shoulder give us pretty good hint about it's direction. The shadow is also pretty sharp so the light source probably isn't too big.

Next, look at her face and you'll see that the environment light is the same blue as the wall. So you can probably create an environment override and do a color pick from the wall.

That 2 should be able to give you a pretty good start.

hey,
thanks for the help

when you say 'create an environment override' is that building something like a dun and sky shader or using a HDRI?

Oh, sorry that's a Vray term. I'm not sure about Mental ray but basically you just want some soft blue light shining from all direction.
