Ridges on a Bottle for Cap?

I am running into a snag editing a simple bottle model, and would love any input or advise.

I am hoping for any input or suggestion on how to create the ridges you would screw a bottle cap onto.

I have tried using boolean with a helix spline to get the desired effect, and it seems to come out looking very distorted and unpleasing. I have also searched for various tutorials and haven't came up with any for modeling a bottle/container with the cap removed.

Thanks,
Braden

Try using the Spring Geometry, its in the create/geometry/Dynamic objects.
Change the sides to 3, and change the value of turns to say 10. Give that a try

Yea, I ended up doing that late last night. I still am working on a way to connect the new "spring" to the bottle itself. Shouldnt be too hard. Thanks for the input though as well.

Aditionally if anyone knows of a decent way to produce a see-through plastic material Id love input on that as well.

One way, to make it continuous geometry ...

1. Start with a plane
2. Convert to ePoly, cut a diagonal, corner to corner
3. Bend to a circle, weld seam
4. Stack a few up, attach, weld seams, then remove (Ctrl-Backspace) them. Remove a few edges at the ends of the spiral
5. Connect the edgering between the spiral revolutions, slide connection to width of thread
6. Extrude faces

After a bit of tweaking, it's suitable for Turbosmoothing. ( I inset the top faces of the thread, terminated the ends of the thread to quads. )

You'll find most of the edge selections you need are straightforward, making use of Select Loop & Select Ring. Don't forget you can grow edge selections along Loops and Rings using Ctrl + the spinners next to the Ring/Loop Buttons, and you can convert edge selections to face selections for the extrusion.

Of course, you can use the same surface, flipped, for the inside of your cap.

Thanks for the reply, I managed to create the desired effect using a spring and using that gemometry to bridge the edges and create the entire cap from the spring. I love your idea though, and gives me a new route to take when creating future projects.

Braden,
