Painting liquid splashes technique?

Hey there!

I have to paint a lot of coloured liquid splashes in the next time, but I find it pretty hard to make it look realistic, especially in the areas where the liquid overlaps itself.
It is also really time consuming.

I know the general principle behind transparency but have a hard time applying it to more complex objects. Any shortcuts? :P

Thank you!
