Revealing lines

Hi,
I'm currently trying to achieve an animation where a blade-like object creates predetermined breaking lines on glass. So there is no actual splitting of geometry at that point but rather the revealing of the breaking lines as the object creates them.
Now my problem is that I don't know if the way I would do it is the most efficient way.

I would create every line with a plane/editable poly object and then apply an animated slice modifier.
Now this is one hell of an effort to create this effect. Does anyone of you know a better solution? A more efficient one?

That printer script is VERY interesting. Not quite the thing I am looking for but defintely worth remembering for other stuff! Thanks.
