Animating a texture

Hey just wondering how I would go about animating one texture to another. Im making a short film based in space where earth slowly dies, I want a green planet that slowly changes its surface into brown/black charred surface. I have absolutely no idea how to go about doing this so if anyone has advice id be appreciative

If you haven't already figured it out, you can do it with a layered texture (under maya>other textures in the hypershade). Input both the green and brown/black texture into the layered texture, and then key the alpha value for the green so the brown becomes visible.

I have never tried using it with vray, I guess you'll just have to test it and find out!
