Optimize Blender for Mac Pro?

Hey guys,
New to Blender and despite being on a fairly powerful comp it seems to get bogged down rather easily. Near the end of modeling this little robot from a tutorial my system was crawling in the viewport. Any ideas how I can optimize it?

Processor 2.7 GHz 12-Core Intel Xeon E5
Memory 64 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB
1 TB Flash Storage

Try this :
Go to File -- User Preferences -- System Tab, then tick VBOs.

Also be careful to avoid many sub-d modifiers with high settings for the viewport - those are not accelerated properly. A standard trick it to apply a deformer modifier after the sub-d modifier, and set the deformation to 0 (no effect). It will then recalculate the VBOs, and speed up viewport drawing dramatically.
