Lighting a room

Hi! I'm new to Maya, so I'm gping to ask a basic question.

I've noticed that the light that produces the best shadows is spotlight. The rest have to be set at very high shadow resolution to look good. So, I built a room, a normal room, with a light on the ceiling. I want to render it with global illumination. I tried with spotlight, but it doesn't light the ceiling if I use it. I combined the spotlight with a point light, but it wasn't enough to light the whole room. So, what's the best way to light a normal room properly? Please.
