Here is an update on the story:
VFXSoldier has posted the incriminating documents

Update? Why are you posting stuff from last summer? There was already a thread about this last July, because that's when that blog was posted. Variety is simply grabbing at any old straws here to keep the sensationalism boiling and churning.

This is getting ridiculous. Do we really need to resurrect ancient topics around here just because David Cohen is talking about them? And can you please start checking the dates of things before posting them as "updates" or news items? :/

Portugal is the same... all Jobs adds regarding 3D, Design, Photography, Journalism etc want Unpaid "Professional" Internship... or very very low pay if you have a degree and are right out of University... since our government pays for like 60-70% of the Salary to stimulate employment and field experience... so every 6 months the cycle begins again with new students.

Similar scam here. Unemployed people get to keep their unemployment benefit money if they work as intern or training for free. The company has to subsidize them a maximum 15 a week towards travel expenses, very generous of them indeed.
Where the abuse comes in is when companies have the interns doing work to professional standards, ie using free labour in place of full time workers. They are not supposed to use free workers to fill jobs that should be filled by paid workers, but many of them do. The newspapers are the worst offenders, and of course they are not going to write stories about it.

I thought I'd put my 2 cents in here. This is actually how the american school system works, I'm not sure if you thought about that. If a school has enough grants, they'll pay you a small amount (usually a stipend around 20k or so) to do research for them. In turn you are able to graduate. The school has you teach, they have you do research which brings them more students, and you get Very little in return. Sure, you get work experience sort of.
If the school doesn't have enough grants, then you get paid nothing, or in some cases actually pay them. So you are paying them to teach at the school and work at the school doing research.
Oh, and if they have enough grant money they Might hire 1-2 students to do some work after they graduate. Do some research on how many graduate and get jobs in their field and you will be woefully depressed.

I'm not saying this is right, but That is our current education system. How is it a different business model than what we are talking about here? Oh, and we bring in foreign students to do the same work, and charge them more money too, which is Sort of similar to outsourcing, except we bring them In to fill the position. So it's slightly better because since they are here, they help our economy, and it's not like it's very difficult to get into college unless it's ivy league.
