Newbie-ish question: Transferring cameras between applications

Hi everyone,

Apologies for the newbie-ish question, but having been looking at trials of various CG software tools and reading various articles, a question (well, hundreds of questions, but currently this one in particular ) has occurred to me.

Is there a standardised way of transferring cameras between software applications? It seems that there is a lot more interoperability between Autodesk's 2013 software than before, but does that include camera (setup, lens information, animation etc.)? And then there's also Houdini, which isn't AD.

Does the FBX format support camera information, and if so, does it work reliably in mixed-tool pipelines?

Many thanks,

Yes fbx does work, but it has its quirks.
My suggestion would be to look into the alembic format.

Though i don't think all applications support it yet. I know maya, houdini, c4d, modo and nuke (v7) support it ootb. Max and xsi support it through a 3rd party (exocortex). Nuke prior to v7 supports it through atomkraft.

Thanks for the reply. My understanding of Alembic was that it was primarily for converting application-specific simulation data into baked geometry which can easily be transferred to other applications. I didn't realise it was for other elements too. I'll look into it more.

That is indeed its primary use. But it is in fact able to transfer other things as well, like cameras, points, curves and lights.

Lights for example have only been part of the alembic format for a few weeks now, don't expect all features to be transfered.

That's weird. I remember moving a scene from houdini to maya a month ago, and i also had the lights coming in with the alembic file. Didn't use them, so i didn't bother to verify if their settings had come in correctly, but the positions were definitely correct.
