Technical Artist - Bardel Entertainment (VANCOUVER)

Position: Technical Artist

Immediate Supervisor: Studio Head of Engineering/Technical Director

Job Classification: High Tech


A Technical Artist at Bardel Entertainment can proactively identify artists' needs, propose effective tools and workflows, and deliver software and process definitions. Extensive scripting work in Mel and Python will be required, with a focus on providing support to automate processes while working as a liaison between Software Engineers and the Art/Animation teams.

An equal combination of a strong creative/visual aesthetic and technical knowledge are a necessity the job is roughly a 50/50 split in these areas. You should also be experienced in one of the following other areas animation, character modelling or environments.

  • Actively and collaboratively participate in the creation, and design of artist workflows
  • Implement, maintain, improve and document art production pipelines while constantly reevaluating the pipeline for further improvements and enhancements
  • Maintain technical integrity of art assets through the entire production process
  • Use a variety of scripting languages, especially Mel and Python, to implement
  • Troubleshoot technical issues involving Maya installations, characters, animation,
    lighting, and rendering automation tools
  • Follow up with stakeholders to ensure delivered solutions work as intended
  • Write code that is functional, readable, maintainable, pragmatic and adequately
  • Participate in and support Agile software development methodologies
  • Report to the Studio Technical Director
  • Respond to tickets requesting support and tool improvements while vetting all
    priorities with the Studio Technical Director
  • Regularly deliver written progress summaries

  • Previous experience with a minimum of two major productions (games, film, or television)
  • Extensive experience working with at least two of the following:
    -shader networks
    -rendering pipelines
    -asset tracking and management systems
    -scene assembly and reconstruction
  • Thorough knowledge of at least two digital content software packages, including experience with both 2D and 3D systems
  • Service-oriented with a proven track record of working effectively with art and technical leads
  • Effective oral and written communication in English
  • Able to prioritize and manage many parallel tasks
  • Critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills
  • Team-oriented worker; able to collaborate and co-operate with colleagues
  • Familiar with source code management tools and practices, especially Git and
    distributed workflows
  • Enthusiastic, active learner
  • Passion for delivering software solutions that enhance artists' productivity
  • Strong attention to technical detail while having an eye for form and anatomy

PERSONAL SAMPLE WORK REQUIRED: Be prepared to supply for our review some examples of your prior work: scripts, plugins and code samples. Attach descriptions of the work you performed including where you started the successes and shortcomings of your eventual solution. Should you have an animation, character or environment reel that you would like to offer for our review, please provide us with online access. Reels supplied through physical media will not be reviewed.

Performance review to take place 3 months from [Date]. This review will be a discussion to ensure that responsibilities and duties have been met as per this job description.
