how to obtain terrain typology map with relative measurements

is there a way to efficiently produce a terrain topological graph like here in 3d max?

maybe a better question is to ask
what software / process do i need to to create such maps?

If you want a topo line drawing from 3d geometry you can use a proboolean imprint option. Just by placing simple planes vertically along your object.

Agree with the above, also (from my notes

worldwide terrain models: (1.5 arc second resolution ) (3 arc second resolution)

Global mapper useful here 350, areas terrain etc. create coordinates to 0,0,0 - import gis data or take a look at Global mapper, think they have a time limited demo.
