Good clean fun in the industry.

An interesting article about where Hollywood gets it's "clean labor" from. http://tinyurl.com/pydwc2b

From the article:

Many students are already married with children by the time they graduate; they want to excel at their jobs to give their families stability.

I didn't read the whole article but one reason for working in Provo might be that that is one of the few towns getting Google Fiber.

Then read the whole article.
The reason they STUDY in Provo is that it's a key area for the LDS church in their most fervently supporting state (UT).

That's a great article. But it's not really a secret that Pixar has a love affair with Utah http://news.byu.edu/archive08-mar-animationevent.aspx & http://unews.utah.edu/news_releases...-to-2012-grads/ He doesn't speak anywhere else. Also when it comes from outside talent there are almost 5 times more cg artists from Utah working at pixar than any where else.

Utah has an ancient history with CG so its not a huge surprise-'teapot' anyone?
Maybe BYU just a very good model for a CG school? Team based productions? Also the character designs are quite strong (for students).

Another school that has similar 'team based' production goals is Gobelins in France.
http://www.gobelins.fr/en/gobelins
And their stuff looks even better than that of BYU imho.

However as my wife is a film/media teacher and I hear plenty of stories about team productions; one or two members do all the work and the other lazy asses do nothing. You can't fake pulling your weight in this industry and make it.

I get the impression Gobelins has a strict portfolio screening process for entry (i.e. if you are motivated enough to have a qualifying portfolio then you have tobe a motivated person. Period). I am curious about BYU's entry process...I see from the web they do screen for A- or better. I wonder about portfolios-from their web its hard to tell...
