Hi everyone, After a failed attempt (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthr...?f=31&t=1038096) at a illustration, I recently started redoing it by starting with a focus on composition and it sorta turned into this instead haha. I figured I'd post it here in it's rough and early stages to get some critique. Thanks!

Can you tell us something about the premise/narrative? It's hard to comment on a narrative image that looks kind of vague, without knowing what the artist's intentions are.

Lunatique- Sorry it took me so long to reply, but I just decided to pick this one back up. As for my intentions, they're simply to make a good picture. I have a few Ideas in my head of where I want it to eventually go - underground city, viewing a projected light trail that indicates the figure is meant to follow, refined robotic and biological elements eventually. Right now I'm just trying to get the colors/mood/composition right. I'd like it to be a nice stylistic painting you might see on the cover of a scifi novel, that sort of thing.

If those green swirly things are supposed to be glowing, then treat them like a light source and light your scene with their influence. Right now, the green swirls are the only visible light source that's significant in the scene besides that white glow above his finger. So depending on whether there are light sources off-camera, that green swirl should have a lot more influence as a light source (which will also help make your image more interesting in terms of lighting).

His legs are on the short side--not sure if that's what you intended. Usually, when legs are shorter than the torso, the person will appear short/squat. This is why artists generally make sure the legs are at least as long as the torso, and ideally longer, unless they want the person to appear short.

Lunatique, thanks for the advice! I messed with his legs a bit, his jacket is meant to be suit-like so it naturally hangs a bit low, but hopefully this looks better.
I also meant for the majority of the ambient light to be coming from the city and off-screen, that way I could darken the area around him and give the composition a nice contrast and focus. I messed with the lighting a bit more though to extenuation the highlighting effect of the glow you mentioned, and hopefully make it more obvious that the city is giving off ambient light.

This is titled "Android", but there are no visual cues that the figure is an android.

I decided to go in a different direction. That title is almost a year old.

Beautiful illustration, with a colour palette like that it makes me think of blade runner. Nice balance of lighting, its difficult to portray two strong light sources in the same scene.

Thank you marcoferrigno! The two contrasting colors of the lights has been interesting to work with.

Well... I think I'm pretty much done. I'm not really sure what else to work on. So unless someone sees something that needs refining I think I'll call it quits on this one. Thanks again to Lunatique for the lightsource advice!

Here's a link to the FULL SIZED IMAGE.
