You can use geodesic voxel when binding the skin to generate better results, but sadly there is no automatic way.

I know it's a boring task but there's nothing we can do at the moment

To be honest though, no matter what binding method I used. I always end up doing it manually.
It just seem way more easier to handle rather than cleaning up the weights of the automatic method.

The options on the binding could help you improve.
regularly I would use max influence 1 and paint everything full white and black, you will need to improve the default values, and then you could use a script to smooth everithing, I use ngskin tools , but that is because we have it at work, but there are many scripts on maya to do this. the base mesh is very important specially to look for an homogeneous distribution of the poligons, if ir is clothes with detail or very complex models I would highly recommend doing a proxy geo with better uniform geometry, and then paint this geo and copy the skin to the original geometry.
