How to make a ribbon setup with 5 controls instead of 3?

I'd like to create a ribbon on a tube to make a rope. I need 5 points of control though rather than 3. I've been using this polyface tutorial to set it up:

And it works fine with the 3-control setup. I need to add a bit of a loop however so I tried doing it with 5 controls and creating parent constraints between each control and the one above and below it.

I'm getting some wierd eval issues though and things are going strange when i undo translates.

Does anyone have any suggestions or links on how to set up a 5-control ribbon spine?
