Maya animation

Hello. My background has been pure modelling and now im doing some animation. I was wondering in practical terms what makes Maya the animation program of choice for professionals. So far i've only used the graph editor, dope sheet and blend shapes/morph targets with some deformers like jiggle etc which i think exist in every other 3d package. Besides those what other goodies does it have animation wise that i'm missing?

For me it's not that Maya has any one particular feature that the others don't, it's just that the animation tools are very 'mature' and cohesive compared to other apps that I've used. I'd imagine this is because Maya has been used at places like Disney, Bluesky, ILM etc and over the years those users have helped shaped the development in a direction that really favors character animation.

I could give a laundry list of features that, for me, work better than the equivalent in other apps, but really it's more of a 'sum of the parts' thing for me. Overall I just find Maya makes it easier to get the animation done in a timely matter.

One other point that I think is important - Maya has the most open platform and is easy to extend whether you are an expert programmer or a casual scripter. It's so easy to modify and create your own workflow when the built-in one doesn't suit the way you want to work. That can make a huge difference in efficiency IMO.
