WIP card challenge - Queen of Hearts

I've been working on some ideas for playing cards for a personal project, and the Queen of Hearts is high on my list.
(I'd love a joker too if I have time between moving house and work, but I'll give others a chance to jump in first)

Hello ...

When can we expect to see some images here?

Really, really soon hopefully..

Because the Queen of Hearts is part of a larger project for me I've been considering her in relation to the deck as a whole and she's going quite dark and gothic, but hopefully with a good dose of beauty and charm too. I've been thinking carefully about my colour palette and stylisation and should have the first sketch in the next couple of days.

After seeing your portfolio can't wait to see what you come up with.

Finally - after a lot of unexpected work landing in my lap, a house move (well, almost), and a three week tour of Italy - I've managed to post something here. It's not much, but it's a start..

Just an initial sketch for now. As I've said before, she's part of a larger project for me, so she's inspired by the evil queen from Snow White. My interpretation of her character will be based on her fear of ageing and death, so she will have a younger appearance than usual. I'm still playing with ideas for jewellery, particularly some form of crown. I'm also toying with the idea of an apple in one hand and a poison bottle in the other. There's still a lot of work to do on the expression, but it's high time I posted something here, so here it goes..

good job so far. My opinion the image looks kinda depressing, brighten up the face a little with a smile or surprised look. GJ!

Thank you for the feedback ShogunWarrior. I have to admit I'm still not sure where I want to take the expression, she keeps telling me a wry smile and a raised eyebrow might be the way forward but I'm not totally convinced yet.

I'm about 70% done now. Still got to do a fair bit to the hand, apple (and maybe a poison bottle), crown, clothing, and of course the facial expression. Also have a couple of other details to put in, and I'm not sure about the bottom part of the hair compositionally so will do something about that tomorrow too.

As previously stated this is part of a larger project for me, and as the Queen of Hearts in cartomancy is often interpreted as a mother figure, I chose to portray her as the evil queen from Snow White. Obsessed with youth and beauty and willing to stop at nothing to retain her position and feed her vanity, I've shown her as a fairly young woman and holding the fabled poisoned apple.
