Because the current generation of consoles are prehistoric at this point. People are stepping in to fill the void.

It isn't just the dated hardware of Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii (U)...

Android is popular, ever growing, and an open platform to boot. Anyone can develop games for it without having to beg for an expensive DevKit and the like.

And Android hardware is so small/cheap that things like the 79 Dollar GameStick and the 99 Dollar Ouya become possible!

For a lot of casual gamers, that's a deal to good to ignore. You can buy a lot of Android games for the money you save on the console.

My Spider-sense tells me that MS, Sony and Nintendo are in potentially BIG F%&%ING TROUBLE.

They may have to rethink their "Closed Ecosystem" and "Walled Garden" type approaches to gaming.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Xbox 720, PS4 and Wii U suddenly get an "Android Emulation"
upgrade, so as not to loose the Android market completely to cheaper consoles...

A really cool development from the Ouya people: they are allowing users to create their own game box enclosures using 3D printing.

When I see multiple Android games start to pull Double A console title revenue, I think there will be some concern for the big players MS/Sony/Nintendo. For now, they are distinctly different markets that appeal to different types of gamers.

For now, there are plenty of smaller niches being filled with hybrids like the Ouya that may be prove lucrative for some game developers and benefit a new class of game player.

What may do in MS/Sony/Nintendo is not that gamers abandon consoles for portable devices as much as the aging gamer in general. The teens and 20 somethings of ten years ago have thinned out considerably according to census for different nations with Japan being hit the hardest. Couple that with economic uncertainties, underemployment and increased debt load taken by 20-30 year old range and a $500 console and $60 dollar games they won't have time to play are even a harder sell.

When I see people playing games on their phone I see not only convenience, but I see people who otherwise don't have time or the to play console games period.

So this happened June 25th for the public.
I must've been under a rock or the bad initial reception cooled news for the Ouya because I haven't heard anything about it.

But then there's this "The Ouya doesnt actually suck - How To" which is the first thing I've heard about it since this thread.

I haven't touched mine since I got it in the mail. Besides time, the lack of good games was the main factor.

I think with so many other potential uses as a multimedia box, the Ouya has gotten a little more interesting, but it was marketed as a gaming machine not a multimedia box.

Emulation has really taken off, but that's not really a marketing strategy.

They are also seeing a lot of antagonism from the gaming industry. What they did to them at E3 was not ok...
