Creating motion trails off of vertices, but only visible ones.

My lord my brain has been racked trying to figure out how to do this. I need motion trails to be made of vertices, or particles on a surface. What I need, is to make motion trails based on the verts movement, but, essentially I need the motion trails to obey backface culling. So that a motion trail is only made if a vert is visible to camera( or an axis). Can you make a motion trail start, stop, and start again ?

here would be my ( one ) solution ( there's many, but here's one ):

1#) see if vertex is visible in the frame

- render your shot with a white surface shader ( or red, or blue, anything but black ) for emitting map

2 #) project your rendered white emit map to your mesh using your main cam as the projection camera

( if , for some reason, the emitter refuses to obey the projected emit map, then bake the projected map into the surface and use that for emit map )

3# ) now you have particles emitting whilst surface is visible: do the rest

done !

phew!

Well, that would work except for say, if i have part of the model say a bent arm, with the forearm in front of ..

I"m trying to do this, and export curves, flatten them in one axis and have them cnc'd on metal

?

the idea in my idea is to use the renderer to see if something is occluded and I fail to understand why would it not work on a character....

Is there a specific model ( a kinda complicated one ) you doing this with ?
if yes, why don't you give us a peak and we could help you more with this?
