chain rig with controlable end point

I am currently working on a real time character for a school assignment and I am almost done rigging him in Maya.
One last thing is giving me a headache though, I thought someone here might be able to help me out?
I am working on my version of DC's Lobo:

One of his trademarks is his bad ass chain + hook:

I would like to rig it so that I can have a control object at the hook's handle which I can freely position (for example in his hand) and the chains follow that motion. A nice extra would be if the joints would dangle around dynamically but thats not a must.
I looked into different approaches like IK and spline IK and tried out maya's hair simulation but I am not sure how to add the control object to the end.
This video here shows exactly what I was hoping for:
but it is not explained how to do this.

If anybody here knows I would love to hear your suggestions.

The ones showed in the video is a splineIk where the curve that drives the Ik is made dynamic with maya hair.
