Programming Custom Materials

I am working on a custom material.

At the moment the cluster of texture filenames are visible as text boxes. This is because my plugin adds them to the node as a string. I would like to show up with one of those nice file dialogue buttons next to it so I can find textures I want. Any ideas on how to do that?

Slightly off topic. The sample material hwPhongShader, from which I am referencing for my material, doesn't change what you see in the viewport. I can change the colour of the material and see no change. When I render the scene out to an image I can see the result of the colour changes (in my case, in hardware and software).

I am wondering why this behaviour occurs. All the basic materials that come with maya change what I see in the view port. Am certain I have simply missed something.
