Meshes not connecting properly

I'm trying to attach a hand I created separately to an arm for my model.

Unfortunately no matter what I do, I always get the same result: there's a clear division where the hand meets the arm, it's not smooth like it should be and I cannot for the life of me figure out what is causing this.

I feel like it must be something simple that I'm missing, does anybody have any idea what causes this?

Here's what happens when I try to bridge them together:

When each vertex is merged manually then smoothed:

It looks like you just need to delete the now redundant inner faces. After you merge the two sets of vertices, the original faces that were there (that closed the meshes) have to be deleted to avoid that creasing.

I may be wrong, but that's what it looks like. If that doesn't fix it, maybe you can post pictures of what the geometry for each object looks like prior to merging.

Not sure if I follow exactly, there don't seem to be any extra faces

Here's the mesh unsmoothed:

And here it is before being merged

Ah, sorry, the original images had me under the impression that there were. Hmm, you don't have anything weird with the edges or verts happening at the junction? I'm not really sure there, I'm able manually merge and smooth just fine, with the same type of topology.

As far as the bridge goes, is the bridge offset set to 0? That's the only thing I see that makes the bridge look pinched like that.

No I ran a cleanup on the meshes, both came out fine. The verts line up at the edges too. I played with all the bridge settings but could never get it to look right.

I'm really puzzled on this!

I think you should check your normals.

What specifically should I do with the normals? I tried hardening and softening them with no luck

What I suspect is reversed normal. After joining them manually, select the model and do as like Normal -> Conform. It will redirect all normals to the same direction.

That did it, I merged then conformed the normals and everything was smooth and good to go.

Thanks guys!
