Modeling advice - Boat design

Hey guys,

I have until Thursday to finish a 3D model of a boat. Now, the boat exists, so I can't just make my mind wander off and create whatever I want to. This particular boat has two boards sticking out of it, and attaches itself with these at another point. This "hole" is driving me crazy - especially because I want the model (polymesh) to be smoothed out when I'm done.

I have a attached a photo of the boat in question, and two of my poor attempts.

This is the first time I have reached a dead end when modeling in maya.
Any tips, tricks or advice as to how I could model this boat would be greatly appreciated

Yep, do up some edge loops so you have a few faces to extrude. The Bridge tool is nefariously obnoxious, but you can extrude the faces and move them to where you need 'em, delete that top face, then merge the vertices. Be sure to unlock your Normals afterwards too, it might look funny otherwise.
