tool for selecting multiple objects

Hello,
Maybe this is simple but I am new to mel.
Let's say we have sphere 01,sphere 02 ,sphere 03 and a circle in a scene.
I wont to select all three spheres by simply clicking the circle.

I'am working on a scene with 10 characters and pretty often I need to select the hole hierarchy of control objects on the left arm(for example) .I know I can use quick select sets but with so many sets it will be hard to find the right one.Instead I need something more intuitive ,like a curve ,placed on the left arm and by selecting it the select sets associated with it became active.
Any help will be appreciated.
