I need help to solve UV flip and normal reverse problems

Hello,

I modeled a character with few armor pieces. I uv mapped left side. After that I duplicated left side to right side.
When I looked at the model on uv map window, everything looked fine, no flipped uv, but the opposite side(duplicated) actual model texture looked all flipped.
If I flip the duplicated side UV, they are all red in UV map window, but actual model texture looked fine.
I reversed normals and flipped the right side of model, then it became black, which means I can't see texture.

Please help me to solve the problems. I am using maya 2011.

Thank you.

Be sure to "Unlock Normals" on your model after reversing or altering the normals. If your model turns black, Unlock 'em!

Hopefully this will help your texturing issues.

Thank you very much for the reply. I did unlock normals, but nothing has changed.
However, if I combine left and right side, the uv is correct?
