Increasing performance with vast number of objects.

I need to place about 2000 low poly skinned biped characters but it takes minutes to even select a single character.

I tried to use containers but it doesn't increase performance unless unloaded, and unloaded doesn't do any good. If I load the contents, it is again back to the crawling state.

Can you recommend any proved method to represent (with performance) -let's say 50 bipeds as boxes in the scene- referenced from an external file and visible only if rendered?
