smooth bind heat map workflow

I'm trying to use maya 2013 smooth bind heat map feature. But I get the following error

Quote: "error . . . does not contain any influences defined inside mesh volume"

I've searched the help and google and I can't seem to find how you add an influence object before you smooth bind.

Can someone please let me know how you add an influence object before you smooth bind?

Thanks

This is purely a guess, since I'm assuming you did put some bones inside your mesh (heat mapping only looks for bones inside the mesh)...
Check your normals. Maybe your mesh is inside out.

Ah that's right it does say all bones need to be inside the mesh.

The error message says I don't have "any" inside which isn't correct, I only have a few outside, kinda through me off.

Thanks so much mate.
