Mental Ray is fine.

In answer to your question: Because it is free and part of Max - but also part of all Autodesk software - so presumably if I needed to fiddle around in Maya it wouldn't be a completely alien task.

I think a better question would be: are you so sure Mental Ray is so bad you need to pay another grand for software?

I would add that mental ray is the best when it comes to dealing with refractions, scatterings and glass, which probably accounts for it's use in archviz.
