It's funny what kind of visual details people pick to explain why it looks uncanny. Like subsurface scattering is too much, or it's not enough dusty, or bump is not enough.

Hehehe... hardly, i bet if you saw it as a still image, you could not tell the difference. The shading aspect of the model is done perfectly, and yet it still looks uncanny. You can still tell there is something off about it, even when it's slight difference, it's actually what triggers the alert in your brain... when something is just slightly off, that you know there is a difference, but you can not tell what it is, and that is what creeps you out.

I think the most problematic part is animation here. The overall large movements are very believable, but it's those micro movements that just do not add up. The movements look like they all are slightly interpolated and smoothed out, but in reality, different muscles contract at different speed, and some movements, especially those micro movements are just not enough spasmodic, or are missing.

With motion capture, you can capture most of the major movements, but you can't really capture all the subtle spasms and twitches, which occur under skin constantly as you move your body.

At least for me that is the first and most obvious difference i see when i compare this CG chimpanzee with some real footage.

But if i saw just i still image at no super-hi res, then i don't think i would be able to tell the difference as (again, i am repeating myself) the shading and fur on model looks just perfect.

Post All being hyper critical?

Yes, I believe we're all being hypercritical because of the TITLE of the post.

"The end of uncanny valley"

It's asking for it.
If it had said, 'Great Realistic Chimpanzee'

I feel almost all of the comments would have been glowing reviews.

I think the video compression makes it more CG looking that it really is.
It's about as perfect as it's going to get. They're right, it's about 98% real.
