normals on cylinder with irregular face arrangement

Hello all,

my first post here....with a normal issue while polymodeling.

I extruded a cylindrical shape out of the corner of a cube and ran into irregular distrubution of faces like this:

I could replace it with a regular poly cylinder, but this would be too easy. I want to learn & understand....

Obviously the problem here is caused by the normal directions.
After remodeling that cylindrical shape with a standard cylinder (got the same look again) my question is this:

How to shade such a piece of geometry softly?

Thanks in advance.....

I believe there are two possibilities here:

1) You can select the edges on the side of the cylinder, go to Normals>Soften Edge.
2) The amount of uneven distribution of edges may have caused the cylinder to have that geo deformation.

Hopefully the first will be the easy trick to solving your issue! Otherwise it's a lot of tweaking and adjusting your edges to reform that cylinder.

marmomeh, thanks for answering and pointing into the right direction.

Normals>Average Normals solved it almost, but not perfectly. My geometry was too bad for maya, I guess

I tried out a lot without being satisfied (even touching normals manually).
In the end I just deleted all the extra edges, which caused uneven shading. Doing so lead to n-gons, but while I am modeling hard surface, this is not a problem.

Result is a cylindrical shape with vertices evenly distributed, according to the standard cylinder primitive I used there.
