you are completely wrong here, might help to use the program before making comments?

Many thanks to everybody who replied--very helpful advice.

I went ahead and bought 2013. The academic package comes with Mudbox and some other cool stuff. So far, I find it to be a good thing, similar enough to 8.5 so that I can work, but with some surprises.

Thanks again!

the Bezier curves are particularly nice change since then. I suggest you find the What's New pages for 2008/09/10/11/12/13 and then you'll be up to speed

they added the viewcube in Maya 2008, if you're in need of a good chuckle.

for Skinning , there are a few very great changes , such as Quaternion-Skinning , and the new possibility to paint the weights in "post"-mode .

python changed a bit - since it was introduces in 8.5 / and also you have now pymel additionally .

well , and most of the actual 3rd party-plugins , are only developed for 2011 , 2012 , 2013-versions and not any longer for 2010, 2009, 2008 or 8.5
