Faster blurred reflections. Help!

Hi, here's my problem

I'm already using Arch & Design's shader for blurred reflections and everything is quite cool looking BUT rendering times are extremely slow. Are there any faster alternatives for this kind of tasks? Using standard Reflect\Refract map is not an option cos I do need blur effect to be more intensive depending on distance from reflecting surface. Thanks in advance!

I don't think there is a faster alternative, but may be ways to make it a bit efficient. First of all you may reduce the sampling according to your requirements.

You can use fast glossy interpolation. It is enabled from the topmost rollout of the arch-design material, Fast (interpolate) option and it has some settings in a seperate rollout fast glossy interpolation. Normally this method might have has artifacts during rendering, but I set neigboring points to look up value to 4-5- even test with 1/1 grid density value. It gives acceptable results, however keep in mind that the problems are related to the angles of reflection so depending on your geometry -viewing angles etc. You may get flickering reflections during animation.

You can set a high detail distance to sample normally then after that specified distance switch to interpolation. You can also set reflection distances from the material's Advanced rendering options, also trace depth. Don't know if it has much effect though; but it has to have.

reflect/refract has a blur option as well, but it still uses standard mental ray reflections. All standard scanline materials render with mental ray's reflection algorithm I believe. Their most settings won't have effect.

Thanks a lot for the advice Byteman! I'll try everything you said this evening!

Are you using Unified sampling? If not, start using it.

I checked reflect/refract map with a standard material at its reflection slot. It works, and blur setting also works creating a nice blur effect increasing by distance, but blur offset setting has no effect. I couldn't test with a complicated scene but it's probably not faster, besides you have no control on your blur and its dissappearing in distance. With arch design you can simply make it more or less blurred while also make it dissappear at any blur amount after a certain distance.

I don't know if this will work for you but you might want to give it a try.
