“The Legend of Sarila” Trailer

Quote:

"The Legend of Sarila (La légende de Sarila) is the first 3D CGI film produced entirely in Quebec. Drawing on Inuit culture and tradition, Sarila was directed by Nancy Florence Savard, and animated in Montreal at Modus FX. Production companies involved were 10th Ave Productions and CarpeDiem Film & TV. Budget was $8.5 million (CAN).

Lighting and Shaders uneven. Some shots almost really good... stuff behind sheet ice, blizzard, or near-dark shots are pretty good. Other shots the lighting on characters and faces/hair is too simple and looks like Cabela Survival: Shadows of Katmai.

Hair doesn't look different underwater with light above or above ground, in blizzard, darkness, or daylight.... Along with that, costumes, bodies, skin do not seem to reflect any environmental tones at all. Standing near a bonfire seems identical to standing outside by moonlight. That is particularly not good.

The coloring disparities make it look like they struggled between doing a kids' movie or a gritty eskimo adventure.

Also... they forgot to edit out the spoiler of the Old Shaman becoming evil after mentoring the Hero shaman at first.

Looks like they are trying to closely approximate the Ice Age / Croods look. Almost but not quite. It's not super awesome but it's not super terrible either.

I think aside from the lighting inconsistencies the animation just feels a little slow in places, like there aren't enough keyframes. The faces and the mermaid seem to stick out as better animated than the rest of the stuff.

But hey, that is a pretty low budget to be expecting everything to be 100% amazing. Were they subsidized?

Is it a good story? Are there any surprises left at all after that trailer?

Look good for a 8 millions first film. If the story is great, who cares about shaders and hairs dynamics.

Congrat to all the CG team!

By the way, just to compare, Ice Age budget was like 95 millions...

It's Québec. That mean yes. Inuit subject = federal money too. I'm sure they couldn't have even started the project if it was not an Inuit story.

Terrific, another "INCREDIBLE JOURNEY".

Like I said it shouldn't take 100 million to make a good looking movie.
I bet if they had another 10 mil to sink into this it would have looked like Ice Age level animation for less than 20 million.

Considering "Ice Age" is circa 2002, and you're making it now, more than a decade later, with today's software, today's hardware, taking into account techniques you may know today versus what was known in 2000 - 2002?

Yes.. quite possible to do it today for less than what it took before.

How much different is always hard to say.
