gradient question

I have a double ended arrow, created with a spline from illustrator, nested in an extrude curbs with caps and rounding.

I want it to be one colour at one end and another at the other end, so I've used a gradient in my colour channel. I'm having a lot of trouble getting the gradient to work along the length of the arrow, and also work over the extrusion. The nearest I have got to what I want is using a 3d Linear Gradient, but it's not right.

Can anyone enlighten me?

got it working by making my extrude nurbs editable, and doing a connect and delete

is there a way though to get it working on the original extrude nurbs? just for interest...

Put in a Connect object maybe?
It's always easier if you upload a file of course
