Houdini MOGRAPH cmivfx

hi,

This is my first ever CMIVFX video.

Trailer

Houdini Mograph
Published: March 28 for Houdini 12

Houdini is well known for being used to create massive visual effects shots which require the use of Particles and Dynamics. The purpose of this video is to show Houdini being used for creating something relatively different. Motion Graphics is a huge field, and because of Houdini's procedural nature, it is a great tool to creating various types of elements that can be used for motion graphics.

The inspiration for this video came from films like “Iron Man” and “Tron Legacy”, especially for the various UIs that can be seen in those films. The video, through a singular animation, will demonstrate how you can create the elements required to create such a User Interface. IT will also show how these elements can be animated using very few parameters so the user has the maximum amount of control over the animation without having to animate a massive number of parameters. Instructor Rohan Dahlvi, will also briefly cover how these elements can be rendered and composited.

regards
Rohan Dalvi

Looks awesome! Been wanting to get into "mograph" (didn't realize that was the accepted term) using Houdini. Nice job!

Look's great, and would be good to see how Houdinin copes with a mograph pipeline, of course there is the fact that the films referenced also had quite a few of there mograph elements ceated in After Effects and C4D, so it would be interesting to see what improvements Houdini brings over those applications?

Since the lineage of Houdini goes back 27 years, (PRISMS for first 12), Houdini was born in a network logo / TV commercial (mograph) environment. In 1985, 90% of all entertainment related CG work was for network IDs and TV commercials.

Today, while a majority of Houdini licenses are at film studios, there are still a large number of studios doing mograph type work with Houdini for commercials and other. Some of the customer stories on sidefx.web feature this. So net / net, Houdini works fine in a mograph pipeline.

As to what advantages Houdini brings, it would be when you can leverage the procedural nature to create variations quickly (for current jobs or future client); or to provide some choreographed motion to many objects. or perhaps the Houdini Mantra render controls, etc; Of course each job is unique, so it is likely their may be no big advantage for some jobs.

Hi everyone,

Firstly, thanks for all the compliments.

As JCGIZMO said, houdini works absolutely fine in a Motion Graphics environment. The main aim of the video was to showcase Houdini being used for something other than High-end vfx simulation type stuff which is what most people think it does.

But frankly I always thought that given it's procedural nature Houdini is a fantastic tool for creating motion graphics , which was why I created the video.

Comparing Houdini to C4D, I can say with complete confidence that everything that the MOGRAPH module in C4D can do , houdini can do as well and even more. It''s just not as neatly packaged as the MOGRAPH module so it requires a little more work. Actually given some amount of time you could actually recreate the entire MOGRAPH module in Houdini as a digital asset.
