Fluid Auto-Resize Max Resolution Limit !

hey folks,

I just realized that I can't set auto-resize max resolution beyond this number "1290". the moment i set the auto resize to more than 1290..it freezes or doesnt auto-resize anymore.
Is it just me or my poor laptop or is it really limitation to auto-resize Max Resolution ?

I know i am not gonna use this resolution number on my laptop or say I wont be able to push it so far but I just wanted to know or confirm if its a limitation or a bug ?

Thanks,
- Vik

I tried it on many machines...One cannot set the Auto resize Max resolution beyond this number "1290 " .. Fluid won't resize & behaves wierd. Does it means that voxel count is limited ?

You can set any number, but I have found it to be strange when raising the number.
Try something different like 2000 or 3000, etc...

Hopefully Duncan can explain, but I've always found it to be finicky...

@Howard : 2000/3000 doesn't work here on Windows Machine. Like I said I have tried on many machines with Maya 2012 & 2013. It doesn't support any number beyond "1290 ".

I'll enter it a bug. I can see why we never encountered it before... that would be pretty high resolution. The maxResolution is cubed when determining maximum voxel count and in this case the value is larger than the max integer size. For example if in mel you do:
int $x = 2000*2000*2000;
// Result: -589934592 // overflow error

We could never achieve 2000*2000*2000 voxels on any machine currently with the current fluids. It would be too much memory. However it is possible that one might wish a fluid to expand just along one axis to for a large flat simulation( like fog in a canal hugging the ground ). This overflow bug could keep a simulation from being able to auto resize to the limit of memory. The max auto resize resolution along a side is twice the max resolution value, so this bug would restrict the max expansion along an axis to 2580. A skinny fluid could potentially auto resize larger than this, were it not for this bug.
