Duplicate Special / Torso Help

I was wondering if someone could help regarding an issue I'm having with Maya. I'm modelling Wallace and the wrong trousers, from Wallace and Gromit. (See Link)

HTML Code:

I'm doing the main torso frame of the trousers, however I'm struggling to where to start modelling it. Can anyone offer me a good way of modelling it? I'm struggling to get the holes for the legs and the overall shape.

Also when i'm trying to duplicate special across the x axis, I can't get the duplicate to change when i alter the original component. So that its mirrored. It just duplicates to a seperate part? Any suggestions? I have used duplicate special before for the same purpose but I can't get it working anymore

Any help is appreciated.
