Unhappy Help: Beginner in Digital Painting

Hi CGtalk people, I just bought my new intuos. I'm a bit frustrated in trying how to learn. How do you guys started in Digital painting and become really good? Please give me tips or where to learn online without spending money. I'm so frustrated on lighting I just cant get it. :-(

For some good digital painting step by step then try these:

It could potentially teach you a lot to:

1) Put a well-lit, well-shot photograph on the background layer in Photoshop

2) Create a transparent layer on top, and paint over the photograph with brushstrokes

In theory, doing this with say 5 - 10 photographs should teach you a lot about composition, colour, contrast, and creating good lighting effects when painting with brushes.

Good luck to you!

And remember that to get really good at something, you need to practice, practice, practice...

I second ctrlpaint.com, I've been painting for years and still check this site every so often to see what's new. There's a lot of good information in the comments for each article as well. It's definitely one of the best resources you'll find.

Do you know how to paint traditionally? It's not essential, but it'll be a much, much longer learning process if you don't.
