Skinning one attached character or skinning separate parts as one?

Skinning one attached character or skinning separate parts as one?

When skinning my character, should I attach all the various parts of my character as ONE object to skin or should I leave it as separate parts (e.g. body suit, armour pieces, etc.) and apply a skin modifier to all of the separate objects? What are the advantages and disadvantages for each one?
