are there any tutorials on understanding displacement?

Especially in Renderman compliant engines. I'm using 3Delight to render and one of the things I'm running into is that I can't find the absolute neutral, which is supposed to be Gray127 or 128 on the Grayscale. I'm working with a very low poly mesh and I'd like to get a handle on using displacement mapping for folds and pleats...

for 8 bit images, usually the black stays still while the white extrude. You'll have to set the alpha offset to negative half of alpha gain in your texture node manually to have your grey become the mid point (1 and -0.5, etc)

that's true in a few engines. Pretty sure Renderman Compliant ones push black down and white up. I know 3Delight does.
