Some context for the masterpiece

I'm Portuguese and I'm in total awe of this painting, the light is fabulous and subtle and the scene itself is utterly touching. I have looked at this painting for a long time lost in its details and it's already one of my favourite ship paintings ever made.

However, I can shed some light on the way that Portugal was "connected" with Spain back then.

In 1478 Portugal lost King Sebastian on a battle in Morocco (Ksar el-Kebir Battle) and because he had no heir in 1580 King Philip II of Spain claimed the throne of Portugal, thus becoming King Philip I of Portugal, (I must say that Portugal was not made a part of Spain but only ruled by the same King, with it's formal independence maintained) this domain lasted for about 60 years and 3 kings ruled Portugal during that time Philip I, II and III.

the reason why I mention this is that by 1588 King Philip I took the Portuguese fleet and merged it with his Spanish Armada (which became the Great Armada) but one third of this fleet was 100% Portuguese from captain down to the regular sailor, ship construction, rigging and sailing techniques.

I say Portuguese sailors because they had been born Portuguese all though Portugal had fallen under Spanish rule it had done so just 8 years before.

So in fact you have made tribute to Spanish, Portuguese and English sailors and also to the biggest Armada of its time.

In no way I want to teach history here, but I loved this painting so much and I saw your interest in this matter so deep that I want to give you some insight and more context on the subject.

Being someone that loves History and Art I just felt like giving my small contribution to a already Great Masterpiece.

Love the detail work! you rock!
It’s no longer “What’s your major?" that you’ll get asked everyday, but “What do you do for a living?” That is the true question!
