to get this look?



this render setup belongs to c4d. And it is probably one of those greyscalegorilla light setup.

how can i achive to get this look with mental ray?

Looks pretty simple. Just lower your material glossiness a bit and play with reflectivity. On top of that there seems to be a fake rim light going on which there are multiple ways you can do it in hypergraph as well.

I just whipped one up for you:

I just added a faux-Fresnel rim to the diffuse colour.



It will look better once you render it in something other than Maya software and reduce the glossiness/increase the translucence.

it is working great. shader network also gave me a lot of ideo to improve. Thank you guys!

I would switch to the mia_material using the ideas from the ones cgbeige posted. Translucence should be easier to control and glossiness will be faster.

If a stronger cartoony look is fine, then the original Maya shaders will work ok.

Remember too that c4d does linear workflow automatic.
